Topper and Rafe were best friends for a long time, it is implied that they grew up together. They both have a feud against the Pogues and they are frequently seen picking fights with them. Topper is often manipulated by Rafe and Kelce into doing stupid things, like fighting with Pope at the golf course. They are shown to trust each other and do a lot for each other, like when Rafe picked a fight with Pope and JJ after they sank Topper's boat. Rafe also never seemed to care that Topper dated his sister Sarah. When Sarah told Topper that Rafe is the one that killed Sheriff Peterkin at the end of Season 1, Topper was devastated that his Best Friend did that. Their brother-like friendship eventually came to an end when Rafe tried to drown Sarah in the middle of Season 2.

History

Topper and Rafe have been friends since before the Pilot and their friendship is almost brother-like. They are rarely up to any good and often pick fights with the Pogues.

Throughout the Series

Season 1

Throughout Season 1 they are often seen hanging out, golfing, partying and picking fights. They are often seen with Kelce and occasionally other kooks as well.

Topper and Rafe are first seen together in The Lucky Compass when the two of them and Kelce are talking about what happened at the kegger the night before, when they run into Sarah doing some dangerous things and Topper getting worried about her, which results in Rafe and Kelce mocking Topper and calling him Sarah's bitch.

When Topper and Rafe are golfing, they see Pope delivering groceries. Topper tries to get Rafe to go get their ball, but Rafe eventually talks Topper into going over there and they both pick a fight with Pope. Rafe starts hitting Pope with his golf club a few times. Topper looks at Pope with a remorseful face but ultimately decides to go with Rafe, leaving Pope.

After Topper finds out his boat sunk, and he realized it was Pope, he went to Rafe because he blamed him for it because he would've still had a boat if Rafe didn't jump Pope when they were golfing. Later at the Cinema, Topper, Rafe and Kelce pick a fight with JJ and Pope for sinking Topper's boat. They almost kill both of them when Kiara shows up and saves them by lighting the screen on fire.

Rafe and Topper are seen together at The Country Club when Barry unexpectedly shows up. He starts yelling at Rafe and Topper goes over there to see what is going on, and when Barry starts getting physical with him, Topper steps in between them to protect Rafe.

While John B is locked in Kelce's laundry room, Topper is outside guardian him while Kelce is calling the police. John B tells Topper what really happened on the tarmac in a frail attempt to get Topper to let him out but Topper doesn't believe that Rafe did it. Later up at the Belltower, Sarah tells him that Rafe did it and he has a somber look on his face as he realizes that Rafe killed Sheriff Peterkin.

Season 2

Rafe and Topper are rarely seen at all together this season. In fact, the first time they are seen together is when their lifelong friendship ended. Rafe was attempting to drown Sarah after a very heated conversation, but Topper shows up and hits Rafe over the head. After he pulled Sarah out of the water, he beats Rafe up and tells Rafe that if he ever hurts Sarah again, then he'll kill him. This is the moment where their brother-like friendship ended, presumably for good.

The last time that they are seen together this season is when Topper goes to meet Sarah at Tannyhill, but she isn't there. Instead he runs into Rafe and Renfield. Rafe tells him that he has no beef with Topper, even though Topper beat Rafe up a few days ago and Topper snaps back that he was drowning Sarah. Rafe then walks away and Topper leaves too.

• They are both members of the golf community in Figure 8, and they often golf together.
