The Swell is the fourth episode of the fourth season of Outer Banks. It is the thirty-fourth episode of the series overall.
Synopsis[]
Tensions rise along with the waves when the Pogues and the Kooks hit the beach for the year's best swell. As Pope digs for info, Cleo faces down danger.
Plot[]
Terrance and Lightner use Cleo’s phone to deceive the group, pretending she’s on "Pogue patrol" while they hold her captive. They try to coax her into revealing the location of the amulet, but Cleo refuses to talk. Terrance, secretly working both sides, warns Cleo that he saved her from being killed and she needs to trust him. Despite his warning, she stays silent until Lightner loses his temper and starts choking her. Just as she’s about to be killed, Terrance bursts in and saves her. Shaken, Cleo finally reveals that the others have the amulet.
Meanwhile, Topper and his crew show up at the beach, attempting to antagonize John B and the others while surfing. Though Topper claims he wants to “bury the hatchet,” the tension remains high. Elsewhere, Sofia continues to work on convincing Rafe to collaborate with Hollis, while Pope digs into the mystery of the amulet. He discovers a potential clue involving “Half-Moon,” which he links to Half-Moon Battery in Charleston after visiting a pirate museum.
At the police station, Shoupe questions Groff, who hands over his phone and mentions Wes’ belief in the amulet curse. Groff claims he was far from the crime scene but incriminates the kids by saying they were nearby.
During this, Cleo manages to call Pope, begging him to bring the amulet to save her life. Pope rushes to help, while the rest of the group is distracted surfing and watching baby turtles head to the sea—until Topper’s group causes chaos by driving over them. This angers Kiara, but JJ convinces her to stand down, though he angrily threatens Topper, which gets caught on video.
Pope arrives just in time to save Cleo, but Lightner, growing impatient, shoots Terrance and steals the amulet, leaving Terrance for dead. When the others return, they’re shocked by what happened, especially with Pope literally having blood on his hands. Shoupe shows up at the bunkhouse, and with a dead body in the living room, the group is left in a precarious situation.
