The Storm is the ninth episode of the fourth season of Outer Banks. It is the thirty-ninth episode of the series overall.
Synopsis[]
Pursued by police, the Pogues embark on the next stage of their mission with help from an unexpected source. Tensions flare when John B confides in JJ.
Plot[]
The Pogues are staying out of trouble when Groff calls the sheriff, claiming he hasn’t heard from Hollis. When deputies arrive at Hollis's house, they find her murdered, and Groff tries to pin it on JJ and the Pogues. However, Shoupe suspects Groff’s deception. The deputies locate the Pogues, who make a daring escape, stealing a boat and planning a journey to Morocco. Realizing they need a bigger vessel, they head to the marina, where Rafe overhears their plan to sail to Morocco.
When the Pogues fail to steal a boat, Rafe trades his fancy boat at the country club to Barry for a deep-sea vessel, hoping to intercept them. Meanwhile, the Pogues face off with the deputies, resulting in a chaotic shootout. Mike Carrera intervenes, causing a deputy to miss his shot, which deflates the Pogues’ boat. Afterward, Rafe stops by Sofia’s, proposing to her as she admits her past dealings with Hollis. Indifferent to her betrayal, Rafe convinces her of his intentions, and she agrees to marry him, planning for a future together once he secures his money.
Shoupe confronts JJ and Pope, intending to arrest them but privately acknowledging that Groff is the real culprit. Rafe proposes a three-way deal to Shoupe, explaining that Groff is responsible for multiple murders, including Hollis’s and the body in the dunes. Going rogue, Shoupe agrees to let the Pogues and Rafe pursue Groff in Morocco, though the Pogues are wary of Rafe’s intentions. Despite Rafe’s claims that he only wants his money, JJ knocks him out, and they lock him in the boat’s bathroom as they head to Morocco, keeping him restrained for days.
Onboard, John B shares the news with JJ that Sarah is pregnant and asks him to be the godfather. JJ, in a tense moment, tells John B he’ll be a terrible father, just like their own fathers were, which deeply strains their friendship. In Morocco, Groff reconnects with the Lupine Corsairs, promising their Captain and Lightner that he will make up for his previous betrayals by leading the Pogues into a trap.
As the Pogues near Morocco, they’re hit by a violent storm. Pope and Cleo fight to keep the ship steady while John B attempts to steer through the waves, but a massive wave knocks him off balance, causing the ship to lose power. Sensing something wrong, Sarah tries to reach John B, but another wave sweeps her into the ocean. JJ, seeing her fall, throws in a life preserver and dives in after her. The storm rages, leaving their fates unknown for a tense period. Meanwhile, the remaining Pogues survive a crash landing on Morocco’s coast. They search the beach and, after a whole day with no sign of JJ and Sarah, fear the worst—until, at last, JJ and Sarah wash ashore, alive but shaken.
