The Dark Forest is the sixth episode of the third season of Outer Banks. It is the twenty-sixth episode of the series overall.
Synopsis[]
Secrets threaten to drive a wedge between John B and his friends. Sarah revisits a past life. Pope reaches a breaking point.
Plot[]
John B reunites with the Pogues again. His dad warns him to keep a distance from Sarah because he doesn’t trust her and John B listens.
Big John tracks down an archeologist, Kelly Keple, to help them translate glyphs on the artifact. Unfortunately, she died so Big John went to search for someone else to help them translate. They find Professor Sowell, who tells them that multiple people have suspiciously died after returning from this dig, including Kelly Keple. Sowell agrees to help but he is suddenly murdered and killed by a poison dart. Carlos’ men are behind the murder. As he dies, he mentions the name Neville to them.
Carlos’ men take Big John hostage. Carlos demands that they kill John B but he manages to get away. John B goes home and tells JJ what happened. They make a plan to go to South America to finish the mystery.
Sarah meets up with Topper and goes to a Kook party. She is led to do so after John B distances himself from her. Topper kisses Sarah at the party and she kisses him back after a moment of hesitation.
Pope goes back to school but because he missed so much class he has to do lower-level classes instead. JJ attempts to get his old job back. He hears Rafe and Barry plot about melting the cross down. He rushes to tell Pope this new information. Pope is frustrated and makes a plan to kill Rafe. Cleo, however, talks him out of it.
Ward confronts Rafe about the stolen cross. Rafe declares he is the head of the family now. Ward decides to go back to the Outer Banks to clear things up.

- John B is forced to distance himself from Sarah, but still wants to make it up when he comes back. But with Topper kissing her, it will be a lot harder when he finds out.
- Kiara only appears in two scenes this episode.
- While at the Kook party, Sarah talks about Poguelandia to Topper, mentioning everyone and what they did there and purposefully does not mention John B because she's upset with him.
- Pope goes out of character as he prompts to murder Rafe for burning the golden cross. Luckily, Cleo comes in on time to stop him.
