Tapping the Rudder is the eighth episode of the third season of Outer Banks. It is the twenty-eighth episode of the series overall.
Synopsis[]
Rafe lays his cards on the table and Sarah calls in two favors. JJ's unorthodox plan to get to South America lands John B in hot water.
Plot[]
Sarah goes to Topper’s house to smooth things over after he was attacked by John B. Topper isn’t as badly hurt as she thought. He’s at the house working out. He tells her he’s planning on pressing charges and urges her to testify against John B. He asks her to meet him later at the police station and she agrees.
John B and JJ are trying to make a plan to go to South America even though they don’t have money or passports. JJ suggests they try to meet with Barracuda Mike, a drug smuggler, to get a ride down to South America. He agrees as long as they drop off a van full of drugs for him. However, they get caught by police. John B gets arrested.
Sarah goes to the police station. She tells Topper what happened to John B’s dad and begs him to hold off on pressing charges. She promises him he will be out of town by the end of the day. Topper tells Sarah he loves her. He agrees not to press charges.
Sarah goes back to find John B. She tells him she has a way to get to South America- her dad’s plane. They meet at the Chaetue. She and John B make up. Topper seeds and he’s furious. He sets the place on fire.
Ward tells Rafe he signed papers leaving everything in Rose’s name instead of his. He cuts of Rafe and sells Tanneyhill. Rafe warns Ward he will go to the police and tell them he’s alive. Ward threatens him back claiming he will tell the police Rafe killed Peterson. Rafe points a gun at Ward but doesn’t shoot. Later, Rafe meets with Barry and makes a plan to have him kill Ward.

- This is the second episode that Sarah is the narrator.
- Wheezie Cameron appears in this episode via archival footage.
- Sofia is seen wearing Rafe's blue shirt with a sunset on it which we've seen in season 2.
- Sarah showed she cares for John B by giving him an extra day in order to search for Big John. Because of this, they make up, making Topper so furious that he goes out of character and sets John B's house on fire.
