Secret of the Gnomon is the tenth episode of the third season of Outer Banks. It is the thirtieth episode of the series overall.

Synopsis[]

The Pogues' search for El Dorado brings them deep into the jungle, where John B and Sarah face the ultimate test of their courage and family bonds.

Plot[]

The Pogues, without JJ and Kiara, along with Ward fly to Venezuela. They form their plan to track down Big John. John B and Sarah find Big John at Carlos Singh’ safehouse. They set off fireworks to create a distraction in order to help him escape. John B reunites with his dad. He immediately shows him the note that Pope and Cleo found. He recognizes it as a translator for the gnomon.

Meanwhile, JJ and Kiara get to South America with Barracuda Mike. They reunite with the rest of the Pogues. John B, Big John, and Sarah go to a fish market to meet someone who will give them passage. Ward tags along. They wait for the others but Carlos’ men arrive and so they have to bolt. When they arrive at the mountain, Ward decides to stay back because he can’t move easily with his injured leg. He promises to send a flare if Carlos and his men arrive. After they leave, he sends his location to someone.

Finally, John B, Big John, and Sarah arrive at the dig site. The gnomon fits in the center of the temalacatl. The moonlight shines on the gnomon and a message lights up. “Brave traveler, if you have wisdom, I’ll reveal the wealth of the earth. I am nothing but hold everything. No tongue but always speaking.”

Carlos and his men arrive after getting a tip off from Ward. Big John refuses to tell them the gnomon translation so Carlos points his gun at them. Ward worries that Sarah is in danger so he shoots one of the men. They run away. Ward begs Sarah to come with him but she refuses.

The group go to a cave to find more clues. Another clue lights up. “The true and patient seeker needs not light to see.” This leads them to find the lost city of El Dorado after Sarah solved the riddle. They pile gold into their bags and go back to Big John, who now has a gun pointed to his head from Carlos. Big John threatens to set off a stick of dynamite if Carlos hurts John B. He throws the dynamite to let the others escape. The cave collapses around Carlos.

Ward then threatens Big John with a gun but the rest of the Pogues show up and surround him with machetes. One of Carlos’ men tries to shoot Sarah but Ward jumps in front of her and gets shot in the chest. As he falls, he tackles one of Carlos’ men and they fall off a cliff. The Pogues head back to the boat. Big John was shot earlier in the day and dies from the wound.

In a flash forward 18 months later, Pope is about to go to school. Kiara is working saving turtles. JJ bought a boat. John B and Sarah own a surf shop.

An old man approaches the group complimenting their discovery of El Dorado. He has a proposition for them- help him find Blackbeard’s treasure.
