— Topper to Sarah in The Bell Tower
|
Sarah and Topper are former friends who used to date. They started dating before the Pilot and Topper is shown to be jealous and very possessive of Sarah. They broke up in Midsummers because Sarah cheated on Topper and fell in love with John B. After their breakup their friendship was strained for most of season 1, but they then became friends again by the end of season 1 when Topper helped Sarah and John B escape the police to prove his love for her. Topper later saved her life in season 2 and at the end of season 2 he is still in love with her and he thinks she is missing.
History[]
It is unknown when they met or how long they dated before they broke up, but they dated since before the Pilot.
Throughout the Series[]
Season 1[]
Topper and Sarah are first seen together at the kegger when Sarah is climbing on a tower in the Pilot and Topper worriedly convince her to come down. They are then seen later that night when JJ tries to offer Sarah a drink and Topper defends Sarah by telling JJ off. They then end up fighting which ends with Topper, John B and JJ almost killing each other. [1]
After Sarah did some dangerous things, scaring Topper, he is seen talking to Wheezie. Wheezie mentions that if Topper says anything about all of the dangerous things that she does, he might end up like Sarah's ex Denny, whom Sarah cheated on in the past. This made Topper doubtful about Sarah's faithfulness. Later in the same episode, they fight about John B and The Pogues. [2]
After a party at Topper's house, Sarah and Topper go to the beach to stargaze. Things get heated and Sarah tells him she's ready to have sex, but then Topper tells her that he loves her, causing Sarah to change her mind. Topper gets mad because of Sarah's mixed signals, and Sarah later feels guilty. [3]
Sarah later kissed John B after spending the day with him and lied to Topper about it. At midsummers, Topper confronts Sarah on what she was doing the day before (when she went to Chapel Hill), but she lies. He then saw her with John B, asked her who she was talking to and indirectly asked if she was seeing someone else. Later that night he got drunk and went to her house to apologize, but he only found Wheezie who was covering for Sarah. Wheezie told Topper that Sarah was at the Hawk’s Nest, so he went to the Hawk’s Nest where he confronted Sarah and John B. He calls Sarah a whore and then the two boys began fighting when Topper shoved him and John B fell off the tower. [4] [5]
After the incident at the Hawk’s Nest, Topper comes over to Sarah's house to talk with her and to ask how John B is doing. The conversation quickly gets heated and they start to argue. Topper tells her that he loves her but Sarah accuses him of only loving the idea of her, Topper then proceeds to bring up the fact that Sarah cheated on him and then he calls Sarah a slut, when Ward shows up and he kicks Topper out. [6]
When John B is locked in Kelce's laundry room with Topper outside guarding him, the subject of Sarah comes up pretty quickly. Topper asks him if they had sex, and John B admits they did. Topper then asks John B if he loves her, and John B eventually comes to the conclusion that he does love her, which makes Topper angry and hurt. Later, Topper follows Sarah to an abandoned old church where she was looking for John B. He climbs up after her and he confronts them both. Sarah tells him that Rafe did it, and he eventually believes them. Sarah apologizes for what she did to him, and Topper is then desperate and says he will do anything to prove his love for Sarah, and he helps them escape by dressing up as John B to prove that he loves her. [7]
Season 2[]
Sarah and Topper aren't seen together at all in the first half of the season. They are first seen together this season when Topper saves Sarah's life when Rafe tried to drown her. After he saved Sarah's life, he beats Rafe up and warns him to never harm Sarah again. After this, he takes Sarah on his boat and takes her to his house. [8]
The morning after Topper saved Sarah's life, we see her asleep in Topper's house. He brings her food and a phone, and she thanks him for saving her life. Later, he takes her back to The Chateau, where John B is. When John B thanks him, he says someone has to look out for his girlfriend, and John B then says that she isn't his girlfriend and tells Sarah to tell him that they got married, but instead Sarah only says that she is "with" him and Topper laughs it off, then he leaves. Later in the same episode, Topper runs into his grandfather sign an arrest warrant for Ward. Topper immediately calls Sarah and tells her. Then when Ward supposedly killed himself, Topper stepped in and comforted Sarah when John B failed to do so. [9]
After Sarah broke up with John B, she went to Topper's house and spent the night there and they then went to the bonfire together. [10]
