The HMS Royal Merchant is a famous ship that appeared in Outer Banks. The ship was home to gold worth $400 million in today’s money.

History[]

What makes the mystery of the Royal Merchant so interesting is that of its treasures. A former slave known as Denmark Tanny was the ship's cook. He was the only one that survived the shipwreck, therefore he had the entire treasure to himself. After a few hundred years, no one knew where the gold was nor where it was hidden. In the present day about a year ago, John Routledge, John B. Routledge's father, was set out trying to look for the gold. Unfortunately, he never came back and he disappeared. While the sheriffs pawned it off as a death, John B. and his crew still believe that he is out there. That of the Royal Merchant, is the most famous shipwreck of the 1800s, at least in the "Outer Banks" (fictional) timeline.

Season 1[]

John B and his crew manage to find a boat wreck after they meet with a person working inside a lighthouse. John B. dives under and inside the boat is a compass. It is soon figured out that the compass was Big John's. After working with Sarah Cameron, he finds out about Denmark Tanny and the gold by translating an ancient letter he found at Chapel Hill. He and his gang soon end up finding the gold at an old lady's house. However, after they try to pawn off the gold, it's revealed that Sarah's father, Ward Cameron was trying to look for the gold too. Ward then takes the gold for his own intentions and flys away to the Bahamas with it. At the end of the season, John B. and Sarah head to the island to take back the treasure.

Notes[]

  • The "Outer Banks Royal Merchant" is based off the real "Royal Merchant".
  • In the tv series the ship sank in 1829[1], in real life however, the ship sank much earlier in 1641[2].
