“ | You've always been against me, don't shake your head, you still are. You're not just against me. You're... you're against us. | ” |
— Rafe to Sarah in The Darkest Hour
|
Rafe and Sarah are siblings and both members of the dysfunctional Cameron family. They have a very chaotic and complex relationship. Rafe is often leering and disrespectful towards Sarah, calling her a bitch more than once, both indirectly and directly. He is often aggressive towards her and he has threatened her on more than one occasion and he went as far as trying to drown her. Sarah seems to be somewhat scared of Rafe from the very start of the show, which seems to increase as the show goes on.
History[]
Not much is known about their relationship before the show's start, but their relationship is at first very strained and eventually, they become enemies. Rafe hates the Pogues, and their relationship becomes even more strained when Sarah starts hanging out with the Pogues more, and eventually joining them. Another reason why their relationship is so strained is that their father usually favors Sarah over Rafe, which leads to Rafe doing anything for their father's approval and attention. Rafe seems envious of Sarah because of this, and he seems to resent her for it even at the start of the show and this feeling seems to grow stronger throughout the show. Rafe has on multiple occasions asked their father to choose between him and Sarah, and he has also tried telling Ward multiple times that Sarah isn't with them anymore.
Throughout the Series[]
Season 1[]
Their relationship at the beginning of Season 1 seems strained, Rafe is often aggressive toward Sarah and has threatened her more than once. He's disrespectful, mean and leering toward her. For example calling her a bitch more than once, to her face and behind her back. Sarah is also dating Rafe's best friend Topper at the beginning of Season 1, but this doesn't seem to affect their relationship very much.
Sarah and Rafe are first seen together in the second episode of season 1 when Sarah is doing some dangerous things and Topper is worried about her. Rafe makes some rude comments about Sarah without her knowledge, and he also calls Topper Sarah's bitch. [1]
When Rafe found out that Sarah and The Pogues stole from Barry, he expressed concern for her when Barry said that he will take care of Sarah if Rafe doesn't. Rafe goes looking for Sarah and when he finds her, he tells her that Barry is a bad man he also shows her what Barry did to his arm when he was late on a payment. [2]
When Rafe finds out that Sarah is going with Ward to the bahamas for business, he goes to the runway with a gun, for unknown reasons. When Sheriff Peterkin is arresting Ward, Rafe shoots her as Sarah, Ward and John B are watching. After John B fled the scene on foot, Ward tells Rafe to take Sarah home and he does. In the car, Rafe and Sarah argue while Sarah is crying. [2] [3]
Season 2[]
At the start of Season 2, Rafe, believes Sarah to be dead, just like the rest of the OBX. This doesn't seem to affect him however.
When Sarah is yelling at John B when they are in Nassau, Sarah yells at John B that she lost her father, her brother and her little sister. Indicating that she misses Rafe or at the very least what they had before he killed Sheriff Peterkin. [4]
When Sarah, John B, Terrance, Stubby and Cleo are trying to steal the gold from Ward and Rafe, Ward sees Sarah and starts talking to her. John B pulls a gun at Ward and when Rafe sees this, he pulls his own gun out and aims for John B. Just when he pulls the trigger, Cleo attempts to take the gun from him and Sarah accidentally gets shot instead of John B, who he intended to shoot. Later when Rafe and Ward are at the police station in Nassau, Rafe admits to Ward that he shot Sarah. He explains that it was an accident, but that he doesn't care that he did. [5] [6]
Sarah goes to meet who she believes to be Wheezie, but it's Rafe. They have a heated discussion and Rafe realizes that she is against them. He tells her that she was always against him, which Sarah denies. When Rafe realizes that Sarah would turn Ward and himself in, he tries to drown her. While he is drowning her, he is crying. At the last moment however, Topper comes to the rescue. He saves Sarah's life and beats up Rafe. He warns him to never harm Sarah again. [7]
After Ward's "death" Rafe wants to make up with Sarah again. As she is about to leave he stops her to apologize and explain. He tells her that he was trying to do right by their dad and that everything he did was to try and help him. [8]
In the Season 2 finale, Sarah was kidnapped by her family and they put her on a boat with them. When she escaped and locked Ward in, Rafe yelled at Rose that Sarah would never be on their side, and that she was a pogue now. When The Pogues are about to escape, Rafe notices and he quickly picks up a gun and he aims at Sarah, he is shaking and looks like he is going to shoot her, but he puts the gun down and doesn't shoot her. [9]
Season 3[]
In Season 3 of Outer Banks, Rafe and Sarah don't have many interactions.
In Season 3, Episode 4 "The Diary" Rafe is seen on the phone talking with Ward about the Cross Of Santo Domingo. Sarah had went back to the house to grab some of her things and heard them on the phone talking. Rafe seems to get pissed off when Ward mentions Sarah. She tries to listen in on their conversation but accidently makes a creaking sound and Rafe gets up to check it out. He looks around the house and says "Hello?" but she manages to avoid him and eventually leaves after grabbing all of her stuff.
In Season 3, Episode 9 " Welcome To Kitty Hawk" Once Sarah and the Pogues are about to board the plane to El Dorado, Rafe and Ward show up on a motorcycle (Which the Pogues openly mistake for JJ and Kiara) to get Ward on the plane since he is the Pogues' ticket to El Dorado and so the police won't catch him. As Sarah was walking off to the airplane, she bumps into Rafe and he asks her to "Please take care of him." (Referring to Ward) and she just walks off with a dissapointed look, and he looks back to her walking up the stairs of the plane as she leaves with their dad and the Pogues.
