The Outer Banks, often referred to as the OBX, is a barrier of islands off the coast of North Carolina, USA. It separates the Atlantic Ocean from the Mainland. Their open-sea beaches and shipwreck diving sites make them a popular holiday destination. It is the site of the infamous shipwreck, the Royal Merchant. Kildare Island is the primary location of the series.
Kildare Island[]
Before the Civil War, slave Denmark Tanny was the sole survivor of the Royal Merchant shipwreck. He used the gold he salvaged in the wreck to buy his freedom and then other slaves’ freedom. He purchased the island and buried the gold near his property. Before he was lynched he wrote to his son to tell him to “harvest the wheat”—a coded message for the gold. This message was lost to history over time. The island was sold into smaller sections over time, however, a division within Figure 8 remained to honor his memory—Tannyhill.
Figure Eight[]
Figure Eight is the upper-class Northside of Kildare Island, OBX. The richest of the rich live in this section and are fueled by generators and contractors. They have the biggest boats and most prominent families. They are referred to mostly as, “The Kooks.”
The Cut[]
The Cut is a location in the Southside of Kildare Island, OBX, where the low-income residents of the island live and work. It is the working class citizens and the home of The Pogues. The Cut is often referred to as the rebellious area of the island where misfits and derelicts reside.
