Mothers and Fathers is the seventh episode of the fourth season of Outer Banks. It is the thirty-seventh episode of the series overall.
Synopsis[]
As a confrontation on Goat Island turns perilous, Sarah confirms a suspicion while searching for JJ, Pope's future falters, and Topper taunts John B.
Plot[]
JJ asks Groff about a letter from Wes, prompting Groff to criticize Luke’s parenting and reveal that his own son drowned, with the body never found. Their tense exchange is interrupted when Lightner and Dalia arrive. Groff hands JJ a gun, and they try to evade Lightner’s mercenaries, fleeing through the mansion and down to the dock, where they find the Albatross, the skiff Larissa supposedly drowned on. Amid the chase, Groff reveals he’s JJ’s father, but before JJ can process it, Lightner catches up and captures them both.
As they’re taken to Dalia, Groff tells JJ that Lightner and the mercenaries, who suspect Groff of betrayal, are from North Africa. Groff claims misunderstandings led to their vendetta, explaining that the hauntings and coups were fabricated. He apologizes to JJ for abandoning him after Larissa's death, saying he now wants to reclaim their family legacy—the blue crown. He seeks JJ’s help, hoping to repair their fractured bond.
Meanwhile, the gang frantically searches for JJ. Pope faces a grim choice: joining the Marines to avoid jail or facing trial. Frustrated, he decides to hang out with Cleo instead. Sarah, dealing with a pregnancy test result, confides in Kiara, while John B confronts Topper, who taunts him about the Kooks being “dirty looters.”
The gang heads to Goat Island, where Lightner’s mercenaries are patrolling by boat. As they wait to strike, Dalia speaks to Groff, revealing more about his past betrayal. She recounts how she helped him escape a Tangier prison, only for him to steal their captain’s log and kill a man they sent after him, whose body Shoupe discovered in the dunes. True to form, Groff attempts to frame JJ for this murder just before Lightner plans to kill them both.
John B attempts to throw a Molotov cocktail to save JJ, accidentally hitting their own boat before successfully launching a second throw. The distraction allows the gang to reunite and escape by boat, but only then do the guards begin firing on them. Despite the chaos, they manage to secure the scroll leading to the blue crown. Groff, furious and vengeful, emerges from the water, ready to exact revenge.
