Denmark Tanny was the only known survivor of the crash of the Royal Merchant as one of the many slaves trapped onboard.

Surviving from the wreckage, Denmark collected the treasures of the Royal Merchant to purchase the "Tanneyhill Plantation" and paid for the freedom of all slaves on the island which would ultimately lead to his tragic death. The Limbrey family during that time wouldn't accept Denmark's payment to free his wife and child from slavery and slaughtered both his wife Cecilia and their unnamed child. Denmark was then killed by the slavers for collecting the remains of his wife and child and burying them under the Angel's Oak tree.

Not all of the treasure was used however. The Cross of Santo Domingo was hidden away in the Freedmen Church that was built for the slaves whose freedom Denmark had purchased. The remaining gold of the Royal Merchant was buried in a well in the “9th Parcel.”
