Albatross is the fifth episode of the fourth season of Outer Banks. It is the thirty-fifth episode of the series overall.
Synopsis[]
The Pogues scramble when the sheriff turns up at the worst possible time. JJ receives a mysterious letter. The amulet's clues point to Charleston.
Plot[]
John B makes the decision to hide Terrance’s body. While JJ distracts Shoupe outside, the rest of the group cleans up the crime scene and hides Terrance behind a sofa just in time. Shoupe, who has seen a video of JJ threatening Topper’s crew, doesn’t charge him but instead asks for his help. Shoupe shows JJ photos of the crime scene, including the bodies and strange sigil, and asks where they were on Saturday. JJ lies, claiming they were fishing, though it’s clear the group’s situation is becoming more dire.
Despite their attempt to cover up the truth, Shoupe begins watching them closely. Meanwhile, Rafe signs a deal with Hollis, though he rejects her advances and claims he’s doing this for himself and Sofia, unaware that Sofia has been working behind his back. As tensions between them rise, the group decides to continue Terrance’s treasure hunt and head for Charleston.
While transporting Terrance’s body in a bag disguised as oysters, they evade suspicion from the police and eventually drop his body into the ocean, saying their goodbyes. Back at the bunkhouse, JJ receives a mysterious letter from Wes, delivered by a man from Goat Island. JJ reads the letter and leaves a note for the group, saying he’s “running an errand.” He heads out to find his father, Luke, who’s been with Barracuda Mike. JJ asks his dad for help deciphering Wes’ letter, which mentions something called Albatross.
Rafe shows up at the shop, trying to talk to Sarah, but Kie refuses to let him through. Meanwhile, John B, Sarah, Pope, and Cleo arrive in Charleston to retrace Blackbeard’s steps. They discover clues in a church, including a stained-glass “North Star” and a crypt beneath the altar. Sarah and Pope explore the crypt but become trapped inside a hidden chamber as the entrance seals behind them.
Outside, John B finds a gravestone with his last name, which triggers memories of his father. While searching the graveyard, John B sees Lightner and his boss using the amulet to access the catacombs. Inside, Lightner and his captain retrieve a scroll from a coffin, which appears to be a key to Blackbeard’s treasure. They lock the coffin behind them using the amulet, trapping Pope and Sarah.
As the water level rises, Pope and Sarah are stuck inside, while Cleo fights Lightner outside. Lightner chokes Cleo, but the captain orders a retreat, fearing the police. John B, not wanting more violence, lets them go.
Back on the mainland, JJ and his father climb to the top of a lighthouse. Luke reveals that the Albatross is the name of the boat Larissa Genrette, JJ’s real mother, died on. Luke is not JJ’s biological father; instead, Chandler Groff is his real father, making JJ the true heir to Goat Island. Chandler, it turns out, is working with Hollis.
